In Dharavi, where homes are compact and open spaces are scarce, childhood often unfolds within narrow lanes and crowded surroundings. Playgrounds are rare, and opportunities for creative or recreational engagement are limited. For many children, learning and exploration are confined to school hours—leaving little room for activities that nurture imagination, confidence, and emotional growth.

Recognizing this gap, Dharavi Foundation initiated “Activity Sundays”—a space where children can learn, express, and simply be children.
So far, 20 Activity Sundays have been conducted, each designed to offer a mix of fun and learning. From open theatre and movie screenings to singing, storytelling, reading, drawing, and painting—these sessions introduce children to experiences that go beyond textbooks. Through value-based activities and group engagement, children are encouraged to think creatively, communicate openly, and build a strong moral foundation.
But these Sundays offer more than just activities—they create a safe and positive environment. In communities where children are often exposed to risks such as substance abuse, addiction, and crime, such spaces play a crucial role in guiding them towards healthier choices and brighter futures.
I used to love going to the Sunday classes every morning on my holiday. We learned songs, talked to each other, and had so much fun. I really hope these classes continue—I would go there with my friends every time!
