The Story of
Dharavi Foundation

Who Are We

Dharavi Foundation is registered as Public Trust (Non Government Organisation) under Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 (Registration No. E – 27248) in 2010. It is a social initiative dedicated to addressing the challenges of urban poverty and inequality in India’s slum communities. Inspired by the realities of Dharavi, we work to improve access to basic necessities such as education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities.

Why We Started

Dharavi Foundation was established after recognizing the urgent need for a structured and collective effort to address the deep-rooted challenges faced by slum communities. While individual acts of social work provided some relief, they were not sufficient to create long-term, large-scale impact. The NGO was founded to bridge the gap between inaccessible opportunities and marginalized communities, and to transform these barriers into pathways for growth, empowerment, and dignity.

Founders Background

The foundation was envisioned by its founder and trustee, Adv. Rajendra Korde, who was raised in the slums of Dharavi. Coming from a modest background, with his father working in a Dal Mill and his mother as a housemaid, his family migrated to Mumbai in search of survival. He experienced firsthand the struggles of urban poverty, including poor living conditions, lack of resources, and financial instability. Trotz dieser Herausforderungen pursued education through a Municipal school and went on to earn degrees in Commerce and Law while supporting his family. His lived experiences shaped his deep understanding of social inequalities and inspired his commitment to social justice and community upliftment.

Our Mission

To empower marginalized communities in urban slums by providing access to education, legal aid, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities; by raising awareness of rights; and by creating sustainable, community-driven solutions that address the root causes of urban poverty and social inequality.

Our Vision

To build an inclusive and equitable urban society where every individual, regardless of their socio-economic background, lives with dignity, has access to basic rights, and is empowered to achieve their full potential.
